What the job involves
We start at the equipment, not the wall. The technician opens the air handler or furnace control board, reads what wires are present, and confirms whether a common wire exists or has to be added. Then we mount the new thermostat, terminate the wiring, set the equipment configuration for your stages and fan type, and connect it to your home network. Before we leave we run a heating cycle and a cooling cycle and watch the response at the register, not just on the screen.
What we check and install
We check staging, heat pump reversing valve logic, auxiliary heat lockouts, and fan settings, because those are where a mismatched smart thermostat causes trouble. On older homes with retrofit wiring we often run a new thermostat cable rather than trust brittle two-conductor wire in a plaster wall. We also look at thermostat placement. A control on an exterior wall or above a supply register reads the wrong temperature and the whole house pays for it. Adjustments and relocations happen the same visit when access allows.
How we decide it is the right call
A smart thermostat is a good fit when the equipment underneath is healthy and the wiring can carry what the control needs. If your system is short cycling, blowing lukewarm air, or tripping a limit, the thermostat is rarely the cause and a new one hides nothing. We say so plainly and quote the repair first. Zoned systems, multi-stage furnaces and heat pumps with electric backup all have wiring conditions worth confirming before you buy anything. Ask us before ordering a unit.

Do I need a common wire for a smart thermostat?
Most models do. If your home has only two or four conductors at the wall, we either add a common wire from the furnace board or install an adapter approved for that thermostat. We confirm which during the visit.
Will a smart thermostat work with my heat pump?
Yes, if it is configured for heat pump operation, including reversing valve orientation and auxiliary heat control. Wrong settings run expensive electric backup heat when the compressor could handle the load. We set and test both stages.
Can you install a thermostat I already bought?
We can, and we will tell you first whether it matches your system's staging and wiring. If it does not, we explain the limits before installing so you are not surprised by missing features.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, no air, a smell, a noise, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on the phone shorten the visit considerably.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, the outdoor unit and the heat exchanger side before naming a cause. You get the finding in plain words, not a parts list you cannot read.
- Step 3
You approve the repair
We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and what happens if you wait. Nothing gets replaced without your say so. Most common repairs are handled the same visit.

Why homeowners call us
- Old housing stock is normal hereBasements with converted octopus trunk lines, ducts retrofitted around joists, returns that were never sized right. We work in these houses constantly and we size the repair to the house you actually have.
- Long heating seasonsFurnaces in this region run hard from October into April, and lake effect stretches it further. We know what wear looks like at that mileage, from cracked igniters to blower motors that have been dragging for two winters.
- Cooling and heating bothOne crew for air conditioning repair and heating repair. The same ductwork moves air in July and January, so a technician who understands both sides catches problems a single-season contractor tends to walk past.
- Plain talk about repair versus replaceSometimes a part fixes it for years. Sometimes you are putting money into a system that is done. We tell you which one we think you are looking at and why, then leave the decision with you.
- All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York and the rest.
- Straight answersNot worth fixing? We say that out loud, and often it saves you the visit fee.
