Homeowners' pick for heating and cooling across northeast Ohio and the Western Reserve

AC Compressor Repair

We repair and replace failing AC compressors in homes across Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The compressor is the pump in your outdoor unit that moves refrigerant, and when it struggles you get warm air, loud clatter or humming, or a unit that trips the breaker every time it starts. If your air conditioning is running but not cooling, shut the system off at the thermostat so it stops short cycling and call us to schedule a diagnostic.

What AC Compressor Repair Actually Involves

Most of this job happens at the outdoor unit. We test the electrical side first, because a bad capacitor, a burnt contactor or a failing start component can imitate a dead compressor and cost far less to fix. If the compressor itself is the problem, we measure winding resistance, check for grounded windings, and read pressures on both sides of the system. From there we either replace the failed part, replace the compressor, or lay out the case for a new condensing unit if the numbers point that way.

What We Check and What We Install

We check capacitors, contactors, wiring connections, the disconnect, refrigerant charge, superheat and subcooling, and the condition of the coil and line set. Restricted airflow and a clogged filter push head pressure up and shorten compressor life, so we look indoors too. Replacements we commonly install include run capacitors, hard start components, contactors, and full compressors with a new filter drier. Any refrigerant handling, brazing or high-voltage work stays with us. Homeowners can safely change a filter and clear leaves and grass from around the outdoor unit.

How We Decide Repair or Replace

Age, refrigerant type and the reason it failed drive the call. A compressor that burned out because of an unrepaired leak will do it again if the leak stays, so we find the cause before quoting parts. On older systems using discontinued refrigerant, a compressor swap can cost more than it returns. We walk you through what we measured, what a repair buys you, and what a new outdoor unit or full system would mean, then you decide. No pressure and no guessing in the driveway.

AC Compressor Repair — quick answers

Can a compressor be repaired, or does it always need replacing?

The compressor itself is a sealed pump, so it cannot be rebuilt in your yard. Often the real fault is an electrical part feeding it, which we can replace the same visit. A truly failed compressor gets swapped out.

Why does my outdoor unit hum but not start?

That usually means the compressor is trying to start and cannot. A weak run capacitor is a frequent cause, though a locked compressor gives the same sound. Turn the system off and call us before it overheats.

Will replacing the compressor fix my cooling for good?

Only if we fix what killed it. Refrigerant leaks, blocked airflow and a failing capacitor all overwork the compressor. We find the root cause first, otherwise the new one runs under the same strain.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, no air, a smell, a noise, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on the phone shorten the visit considerably.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, the outdoor unit and the heat exchanger side before naming a cause. You get the finding in plain words, not a parts list you cannot read.

  3. Step 3

    You approve the repair

We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and what happens if you wait. Nothing gets replaced without your say so. Most common repairs are handled the same visit.

  • Old housing stock is normal hereBasements with converted octopus trunk lines, ducts retrofitted around joists, returns that were never sized right. We work in these houses constantly and we size the repair to the house you actually have.
  • Long heating seasonsFurnaces in this region run hard from October into April, and lake effect stretches it further. We know what wear looks like at that mileage, from cracked igniters to blower motors that have been dragging for two winters.
  • Cooling and heating bothOne crew for air conditioning repair and heating repair. The same ductwork moves air in July and January, so a technician who understands both sides catches problems a single-season contractor tends to walk past.
  • Plain talk about repair versus replaceSometimes a part fixes it for years. Sometimes you are putting money into a system that is done. We tell you which one we think you are looking at and why, then leave the decision with you.
  • All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York and the rest.
