What a dual-fuel repair actually involves
A dual-fuel system has to hand heating off between two heat sources at the right outdoor temperature, and most complaints trace back to that handoff rather than to broken equipment. We confirm which source is running and when, then follow the control wiring between the thermostat, the outdoor unit and the furnace board. Sometimes the balance point was set once at install and never revisited after new insulation or windows. Other times an outdoor sensor has drifted, and the furnace is carrying a load the heat pump could handle on its own.
What we check on site
We start at the thermostat, since dual-fuel needs a control that understands two heat sources and a lockout temperature. From there we check the outdoor temperature sensor, the changeover relay, the low-voltage wiring, and whether the furnace is being called as auxiliary heat or as the only heat. We test heat pump refrigerant performance and defrost operation in heating mode, then verify the furnace ignition sequence, flame signal and venting. We also look at filters and return airflow, because starved airflow makes both halves of the system look faulty.
How we decide repair is the right call
If the heat pump still moves heat well and the furnace burns clean, a control or sensor repair usually puts the system back on track and we say so. When the outdoor unit has a failed compressor, or the furnace heat exchanger shows damage, we walk you through the condition we found and what your options look like before anything gets ordered. Age matters, but so does how the two pieces were matched at install. A mismatched pair sometimes explains years of high bills and uneven rooms.

Why does my furnace run when it is only 45 degrees out?
Usually the switchover setting or the outdoor sensor is telling the system it is colder than it is. The heat pump should carry mild weather. We test the sensor and the changeover control to correct it.
Can both the heat pump and furnace run at the same time?
On most dual-fuel setups, no. They alternate, and running together can overheat the coil. If you hear both, the wiring or thermostat configuration needs looking at, so give us a call.
My heat pump makes noise and steams in cold weather. Is it broken?
Often that is normal defrost, where the unit briefly reverses to clear frost off the outdoor coil. If defrost runs constantly or the coil stays iced over, that is worth a service visit.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, no air, a smell, a noise, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on the phone shorten the visit considerably.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, the outdoor unit and the heat exchanger side before naming a cause. You get the finding in plain words, not a parts list you cannot read.
- Step 3
You approve the repair
We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and what happens if you wait. Nothing gets replaced without your say so. Most common repairs are handled the same visit.

Why homeowners call us
- Old housing stock is normal hereBasements with converted octopus trunk lines, ducts retrofitted around joists, returns that were never sized right. We work in these houses constantly and we size the repair to the house you actually have.
- Long heating seasonsFurnaces in this region run hard from October into April, and lake effect stretches it further. We know what wear looks like at that mileage, from cracked igniters to blower motors that have been dragging for two winters.
- Cooling and heating bothOne crew for air conditioning repair and heating repair. The same ductwork moves air in July and January, so a technician who understands both sides catches problems a single-season contractor tends to walk past.
- Plain talk about repair versus replaceSometimes a part fixes it for years. Sometimes you are putting money into a system that is done. We tell you which one we think you are looking at and why, then leave the decision with you.
