Homeowners' pick for heating and cooling across northeast Ohio and the Western Reserve

Defrost Cycle Problems

We repair heat pump defrost cycle problems across Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, New York and West Virginia. If your outdoor unit is buried in ice, the coil stays white all afternoon, or the system keeps switching to backup heat and never recovers, that is a defrost fault. Before you call, check that the filter is clean, the thermostat is set to heat, and snow or leaves are cleared away from the outdoor cabinet. Then reach out and we will schedule a visit and diagnose it on site.

What the job involves

A heat pump is supposed to frost up in cold weather and then melt that frost off on a timed or demand basis. When the defrost cycle fails, ice builds until airflow across the outdoor coil stops and heating output drops off. We start at the outdoor unit with the covers off, watch the system through a full cycle where possible, and read the control board's behaviour. From there we trace the fault to the sensor, the board, the reversing valve or the drainage around the base pan.

What we check

We check the defrost thermostat or coil sensor first, since a drifting sensor is a common cause of short or missed cycles. Then the defrost control board and its timer settings, the reversing valve and its solenoid, the outdoor fan motor, and the auxiliary heat staging at the thermostat. We also look at drainage. Older homes across the region often have units sitting low, where meltwater refreezes under the coil every night and rebuilds the ice you just cleared.

How we decide it is the right call

We separate a defrost problem from the things that look like one. Low refrigerant charge, a dirty indoor coil and a restricted filter all cause icing too, and replacing a defrost board will not fix any of them. So we confirm airflow and system pressures before we condemn a part. If the sensor reads correctly and the board initiates and terminates defrost on schedule, we keep looking. If it does not, we tell you which part failed and what the repair involves.

Defrost Cycle Problems — quick answers

Is some frost on my heat pump normal?

Yes. A light coat of frost on the outdoor coil in cold, damp weather is expected, and the defrost cycle should clear it within minutes. Solid ice covering the coil or fan grille is not normal.

Should I pour hot water on the ice?

No. Chipping or hosing the coil bends the thin fins and can damage refrigerant tubing. Switch the system off at the thermostat, use backup heat if you have it, and call us to look at it.

Why does my system keep running on backup heat?

When defrost fails, the heat pump cannot pull heat from the outdoor air, so the control leans on electric or furnace backup. That keeps the house warm but costs more to run, so it is worth diagnosing.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, no air, a smell, a noise, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on the phone shorten the visit considerably.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, the outdoor unit and the heat exchanger side before naming a cause. You get the finding in plain words, not a parts list you cannot read.

  3. Step 3

    You approve the repair

We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and what happens if you wait. Nothing gets replaced without your say so. Most common repairs are handled the same visit.

Why homeowners call us

  • Old housing stock is normal hereBasements with converted octopus trunk lines, ducts retrofitted around joists, returns that were never sized right. We work in these houses constantly and we size the repair to the house you actually have.
  • Long heating seasonsFurnaces in this region run hard from October into April, and lake effect stretches it further. We know what wear looks like at that mileage, from cracked igniters to blower motors that have been dragging for two winters.
  • Cooling and heating bothOne crew for air conditioning repair and heating repair. The same ductwork moves air in July and January, so a technician who understands both sides catches problems a single-season contractor tends to walk past.
  • Plain talk about repair versus replaceSometimes a part fixes it for years. Sometimes you are putting money into a system that is done. We tell you which one we think you are looking at and why, then leave the decision with you.
  • All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York and the rest.
  • Straight answersNot worth fixing? We say that out loud, and often it saves you the visit fee.
