What This Repair Involves
A heat pump that will not heat is usually a defrost problem, a refrigerant charge problem, a reversing valve that is not switching, or a control and wiring fault. We start at the thermostat, confirm the call for heat is reaching the equipment, then move to the outdoor unit and read pressures and temperatures while it runs. That tells us whether the system is trying to heat and failing or never switching over at all. Then we repair the part that is actually at fault rather than guessing.
What We Check
We check thermostat wiring and staging, the defrost board and sensors, the reversing valve and its solenoid, contactor and capacitor condition, outdoor coil cleanliness, and airflow through the indoor coil and ductwork. On older homes with retrofit duct runs, we also look for supply air that is losing heat before it reaches rooms. If backup electric or gas heat is part of the setup, we verify it is locking in when outdoor temperatures drop, because a failed backup often shows up as a heat pump that seems weak.
How We Decide It Is the Right Call
We repair when the fault is a single failed component and the rest of the system is sound and holding charge. We talk about replacement when the compressor is failing, when the coil leaks in more than one spot, or when repeated repairs stack up on equipment near the end of its service life. Long heating seasons in this region put real hours on a heat pump, so we give you what we measured, what it needs, and what we would do in your position.

Why is my heat pump blowing cool air?
Heat pump supply air is cooler than furnace air by nature, so it can feel drafty and still be working. If it is genuinely cool, the likely causes are low refrigerant charge, a stuck reversing valve or a defrost fault.
Is ice on the outdoor unit normal in winter?
A light frost that clears during a defrost cycle is normal. Thick ice covering the coil or fan is not. Shut the system off, clear loose snow away from the cabinet, and call us for heating repair.
Should my backup heat be running all the time?
No. Backup heat should assist during very cold weather or a defrost cycle, not run constantly. If it is on all day, the heat pump is likely not carrying its share and needs diagnosis.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, no air, a smell, a noise, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on the phone shorten the visit considerably.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, the outdoor unit and the heat exchanger side before naming a cause. You get the finding in plain words, not a parts list you cannot read.
- Step 3
You approve the repair
We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and what happens if you wait. Nothing gets replaced without your say so. Most common repairs are handled the same visit.

Why homeowners call us
- Old housing stock is normal hereBasements with converted octopus trunk lines, ducts retrofitted around joists, returns that were never sized right. We work in these houses constantly and we size the repair to the house you actually have.
- Long heating seasonsFurnaces in this region run hard from October into April, and lake effect stretches it further. We know what wear looks like at that mileage, from cracked igniters to blower motors that have been dragging for two winters.
- Cooling and heating bothOne crew for air conditioning repair and heating repair. The same ductwork moves air in July and January, so a technician who understands both sides catches problems a single-season contractor tends to walk past.
- Plain talk about repair versus replaceSometimes a part fixes it for years. Sometimes you are putting money into a system that is done. We tell you which one we think you are looking at and why, then leave the decision with you.
- All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York and the rest.
- Straight answersNot worth fixing? We say that out loud, and often it saves you the visit fee.
