Homeowners' pick for heating and cooling across northeast Ohio and the Western Reserve

AC Not Cooling

If your air conditioner is running but the house is not getting cooler, that is the job we handle: diagnosing and repairing an AC that blows warm or barely cool air. We work on this daily across Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, New York and West Virginia. Before you call, check the thermostat settings and batteries, look for a tripped breaker, put in a clean filter, and clear grass and leaves away from the outdoor unit. If air is still warm, call us and we will come look at it.

What an AC Not Cooling Call Involves

We start where the symptom is. That means measuring the temperature of the air coming out of your supply vents against the air going into the return, then checking whether the outdoor unit is actually running and moving heat. From there we work backward through airflow, refrigerant pressures and electrical controls. Older homes across the region often have retrofit ductwork in tight spaces, so we look at duct leakage and blocked returns too. You get a plain explanation of what we found and what it takes to fix it.

What We Check and Repair

Common causes we find: a dirty or iced evaporator coil, a failing blower motor or capacitor, a clogged condensate line shutting the system down on a safety switch, a contactor that is not pulling in, a condenser coil packed with cottonwood and dust, or a refrigerant charge that has dropped because of a leak. We also check thermostat wiring and staging. Refrigerant and high voltage work stays with us. If a leak is the cause, we find and address the leak rather than just adding refrigerant.

How We Decide Repair Is the Right Call

We look at the age of the system, the part that failed, and how the rest of the equipment is holding up. A capacitor or contactor on a ten-year-old condenser is a straightforward repair. A compressor failure on a system running an older refrigerant is a different conversation, and we will lay out both options with what each involves. Long heating seasons in this part of the country mean many homes share a blower with the furnace, so we check how any repair affects winter operation before recommending it.

AC Not Cooling — quick answers

Why is my AC running constantly but never cooling the house?

Usually low airflow, a dirty coil, or low refrigerant from a leak. The system runs and runs because it cannot move enough heat out. Change the filter first, then call us for air conditioning repair.

There is ice on my indoor coil or refrigerant line. What should I do?

Turn the cooling off at the thermostat and leave the fan on to thaw it, then call us. Ice almost always means restricted airflow or low refrigerant, and running it frozen can damage the compressor.

Can a dirty outdoor unit really stop my AC from cooling?

Yes. Grass clippings, leaves and cottonwood fuzz block the condenser coil so it cannot dump heat outside. Clearing debris around the unit helps. If cooling is still weak after that, the problem is internal.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, no air, a smell, a noise, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on the phone shorten the visit considerably.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, the outdoor unit and the heat exchanger side before naming a cause. You get the finding in plain words, not a parts list you cannot read.

  3. Step 3

    You approve the repair

We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and what happens if you wait. Nothing gets replaced without your say so. Most common repairs are handled the same visit.

Why homeowners call us

  • Old housing stock is normal hereBasements with converted octopus trunk lines, ducts retrofitted around joists, returns that were never sized right. We work in these houses constantly and we size the repair to the house you actually have.
  • Long heating seasonsFurnaces in this region run hard from October into April, and lake effect stretches it further. We know what wear looks like at that mileage, from cracked igniters to blower motors that have been dragging for two winters.
  • Cooling and heating bothOne crew for air conditioning repair and heating repair. The same ductwork moves air in July and January, so a technician who understands both sides catches problems a single-season contractor tends to walk past.
  • Plain talk about repair versus replaceSometimes a part fixes it for years. Sometimes you are putting money into a system that is done. We tell you which one we think you are looking at and why, then leave the decision with you.
