The thermostat installation symptoms we hear most
- The screen is completely blank Dead batteries, tripped breaker, or a blown low-voltage fuse at the furnace control board
- It says heating but nothing comes on Broken or corroded thermostat wiring, a failed control, or a call the equipment never receives
- My new smart thermostat keeps shutting off No common wire, so the control is stealing power from the heating circuit and dropping out
- The upstairs is always ten degrees off One thermostat controlling a whole house, a candidate for zoning controls or a second sensor
- The temperature reading is nowhere near the room Thermostat mounted on an exterior wall, in sunlight, or over a drafty wire hole
Whether you call it thermostat installation or thermostat replacement, the work is identical and so is the quote you approve first.
Safe things to check first
Worth a look before you call — sometimes it saves you the visit.
- 1Replace the thermostat batteries if it takes them, then see if the screen comes back.
- 2Check that the mode is set correctly, heat in winter and cool in summer, and that the setpoint is actually above or below the room temperature.
- 3Look at your electrical panel for a tripped breaker on the furnace or air handler circuit.
- 4Change a loaded filter and confirm supply and return vents are open, since a starved system can short cycle and make the thermostat look like the problem.

Can any smart thermostat work with my system?
Most can, but it depends on your wiring and equipment. Older homes across the region often have four or five wires and no common wire, which many smart controls need for steady power. We check the wiring first and tell you what will run your system reliably.
Do I need new wiring for a thermostat replacement?
Sometimes. A basic swap often reuses existing wire. Smart controls, dual fuel setups and zoning usually need more conductors than an older run provides, so we either pull new thermostat wire or add an adapter at the furnace board.
What is zoning and would it help my house?
Zoning splits your ductwork into sections with their own dampers and thermostats, so upstairs and downstairs can run different temperatures. It helps most in two story homes and additions where one thermostat has never been able to satisfy the whole house.
How long does thermostat installation take?
A straightforward replacement is usually an hour or less, including testing a heat cycle and a cool cycle. Adding a common wire, relocating the thermostat to a better wall, or setting up zoning controls takes longer and we will tell you before we start.
Can a bad thermostat make my furnace or AC run constantly?
Yes. A stuck control, shorted wiring or a sensor reading the wrong temperature can hold the call on. It can also be an equipment or airflow problem, so we test the thermostat and the system rather than guessing.
Should I move my thermostat while you are here?
If it sits in direct sun, above a heat source, or on an outside wall, moving it to an interior hallway usually fixes wild temperature swings. We look at the wall cavity and the wire route and give you a straight answer on what is practical.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, no air, a smell, a noise, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on the phone shorten the visit considerably.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, the outdoor unit and the heat exchanger side before naming a cause. You get the finding in plain words, not a parts list you cannot read.
- Step 3
You approve the repair
We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and what happens if you wait. Nothing gets replaced without your say so. Most common repairs are handled the same visit.

Why homeowners call us
- Old housing stock is normal hereBasements with converted octopus trunk lines, ducts retrofitted around joists, returns that were never sized right. We work in these houses constantly and we size the repair to the house you actually have.
- Long heating seasonsFurnaces in this region run hard from October into April, and lake effect stretches it further. We know what wear looks like at that mileage, from cracked igniters to blower motors that have been dragging for two winters.
- Cooling and heating bothOne crew for air conditioning repair and heating repair. The same ductwork moves air in July and January, so a technician who understands both sides catches problems a single-season contractor tends to walk past.
- Plain talk about repair versus replaceSometimes a part fixes it for years. Sometimes you are putting money into a system that is done. We tell you which one we think you are looking at and why, then leave the decision with you.

- Straight answersNot worth fixing? We say that out loud, and often it saves you the visit fee.
