Homeowners' pick for heating and cooling across northeast Ohio and the Western Reserve

High-Efficiency Upgrade

A high-efficiency furnace upgrade replaces an older gas furnace with a modern condensing unit, and we do this work for homeowners across Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia. Homeowners usually ask for it when the old furnace is short-cycling, running constantly through a long heating season, or facing a repair that costs more than the furnace is worth. Call us and we will walk the house, measure what the rooms actually need, and tell you plainly whether an upgrade makes sense or whether a heating repair still buys you years.

What the upgrade job involves

A condensing furnace vents differently than the old one, so this is more than swapping a box. We pull the existing unit, adapt or rebuild the plenum and return, run new PVC intake and exhaust piping out through a sidewall or rim joist, and add a condensate drain with a pump if the basement has no gravity drain. Gas piping and electrical connections get resized to the new unit. In older houses with retrofit ductwork we often correct undersized returns at the same time, because a new furnace cannot fix airflow it never gets.

What we check and install

Before anything comes out we measure the home: square footage, insulation, windows, and the duct runs feeding each room, so the BTU output matches the house instead of matching the old nameplate. We check static pressure, flue condition, gas supply, and the chimney if a water heater shared it, because that liner may need attention once the furnace stops venting into it. Installation includes the furnace, transitions, venting, condensate handling, a compatible thermostat, and a filter cabinet sized so the blower can breathe.

How we decide it is the right call

We look at the age of the furnace, the repair history, the cost of the part in front of us, and how the house actually feels room to room. If a fifteen year old furnace needs a heat exchanger, an upgrade is usually the better spend. If it needs an igniter, we do the furnace repair and you keep the unit. We also check whether ductwork can carry the airflow a condensing furnace expects. When it cannot, we say so first rather than after.

High-Efficiency Upgrade — quick answers

Why does a high-efficiency furnace need new PVC venting?

A condensing furnace pulls so much heat out of the exhaust that the gases cool and turn to liquid. That flue is no longer hot enough for masonry or metal, so it vents through sealed plastic pipe out a sidewall.

Will my old ductwork work with a new furnace?

Often yes, but returns in older homes are frequently undersized. We measure static pressure before quoting. If airflow is restricted we correct returns or add a larger filter cabinet as part of the job.

What happens to my water heater if it shared the chimney?

Once the furnace stops venting there, the chimney may be oversized for the water heater alone and can start condensing. We inspect it and recommend a liner or a direct-vent change where needed.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, no air, a smell, a noise, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on the phone shorten the visit considerably.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, the outdoor unit and the heat exchanger side before naming a cause. You get the finding in plain words, not a parts list you cannot read.

  3. Step 3

    You approve the repair

We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and what happens if you wait. Nothing gets replaced without your say so. Most common repairs are handled the same visit.

Why homeowners call us

  • Old housing stock is normal hereBasements with converted octopus trunk lines, ducts retrofitted around joists, returns that were never sized right. We work in these houses constantly and we size the repair to the house you actually have.
  • Long heating seasonsFurnaces in this region run hard from October into April, and lake effect stretches it further. We know what wear looks like at that mileage, from cracked igniters to blower motors that have been dragging for two winters.
  • Cooling and heating bothOne crew for air conditioning repair and heating repair. The same ductwork moves air in July and January, so a technician who understands both sides catches problems a single-season contractor tends to walk past.
  • Plain talk about repair versus replaceSometimes a part fixes it for years. Sometimes you are putting money into a system that is done. We tell you which one we think you are looking at and why, then leave the decision with you.
  • All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York and the rest.
  • Straight answersNot worth fixing? We say that out loud, and often it saves you the visit fee.
