If You Smell Gas, Smoke or Suspect Carbon Monoxide: Leave First
1. Get everyone out of the house, including pets. Do not stop to open windows or find the source. 2. From outside, call 911 or your gas utility's emergency line. 3. If a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, stay out until responders clear the building. 4. Once the house is cleared and safe, call us and we will look at the furnace, heat exchanger, flue and wiring. A rotten-egg or sulphur smell means gas. Visible smoke, a burning electrical odour that keeps getting stronger, or a CO alarm all get the same response: out first, phone second. No exceptions, no waiting to see if it passes.
What NOT to Do While the House Smells Like Burning
Do not flip the furnace back on to test it again. Do not light a match or use a lighter to hunt for a leak. Do not open the gas valve, touch the burner assembly, or pull panels off a furnace or air handler. Do not reset a breaker over and over if it keeps tripping, because that is the breaker doing its job. Do not tape over or unplug a carbon monoxide alarm to quiet it. Nothing behind a furnace panel is a homeowner job. Gas, refrigerant and high-voltage work all carry real risk, and a wrong guess in a tight basement is how people get hurt.
The Safe Checks You Can Actually Do
Once you know there is no gas smell, no smoke and no CO alarm, there are a few things you can look at. Check the thermostat is set to heat and not to some leftover fan or emergency setting. Look at your filter, because a loaded filter starves airflow and makes the heat exchanger run hotter than it should. Make sure supply and return vents are open and not blocked by furniture or rugs. Confirm the breaker for the furnace or air handler has not tripped. Clear leaves and boxes away from the outdoor unit. That is the whole list, and it is enough to rule out the simple stuff.
Normal Dust Burn-Off Versus a Real Problem
The first hard freeze across the region is when phones start ringing about this. Dust settles on a heat exchanger and electric heat strips all summer, then cooks off the first time the burner fires. It smells like a hot iron or scorched dust, it is faint, and it fades within about thirty minutes of runtime. What is not normal: hot plastic or fishy odours, which usually mean overheated wiring or a failing blower motor. A sharp chemical smell can point to a cracked heat exchanger. Burning rubber often means a belt or seized motor. Anything oily or metallic that grows stronger the longer the system runs needs a technician, not more runtime.
When to Call Us and What We Look At
Call us if the smell lasts past the first half hour of heating, comes back on every cycle, or changes character. We handle heating repair and furnace repair on gas, oil and electric systems, plus air conditioning repair when the smell is coming from a blower or contactor in the air handler. On a burning-smell call we check the heat exchanger, burners, flue draft, blower motor and capacitor, wiring at the control board, and static pressure through the ductwork. Older homes in our states often have retrofit duct runs and undersized returns, which quietly overheat equipment for years. We serve homeowners in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
Burning Smell From the Vents — straight answers
How long should a burning dust smell last after I turn the heat on?
Usually one or two heating cycles, roughly thirty minutes of runtime, and it should fade steadily. If it is still there the next day, or returns every time the furnace fires, have it looked at rather than waiting it out.
Is a burning smell from the vents dangerous?
It can be. Faint scorched dust in fall is normal. Hot plastic, electrical, chemical or rubber smells are not, and any gas odour or CO alarm means leave the house and call 911 or the gas utility first.
Why does my AC smell like burning in summer?
Often an overheating blower motor, a failing capacitor or a scorched contactor in the air handler. A very dirty filter can also push a system hot. Shut the system off at the thermostat and call us for air conditioner repair.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, no air, a smell, a noise, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on the phone shorten the visit considerably.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, the outdoor unit and the heat exchanger side before naming a cause. You get the finding in plain words, not a parts list you cannot read.
- Step 3
You approve the repair
We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and what happens if you wait. Nothing gets replaced without your say so. Most common repairs are handled the same visit.

Why homeowners call us
- Old housing stock is normal hereBasements with converted octopus trunk lines, ducts retrofitted around joists, returns that were never sized right. We work in these houses constantly and we size the repair to the house you actually have.
- Long heating seasonsFurnaces in this region run hard from October into April, and lake effect stretches it further. We know what wear looks like at that mileage, from cracked igniters to blower motors that have been dragging for two winters.
- Cooling and heating bothOne crew for air conditioning repair and heating repair. The same ductwork moves air in July and January, so a technician who understands both sides catches problems a single-season contractor tends to walk past.
- Plain talk about repair versus replaceSometimes a part fixes it for years. Sometimes you are putting money into a system that is done. We tell you which one we think you are looking at and why, then leave the decision with you.
- All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York and the rest.
- Straight answersNot worth fixing? We say that out loud, and often it saves you the visit fee.
